Building Envelope Requirements in the IBC

Chapter 14 of the 2015 IBC contains the prescriptive and performance based requirements for building envelope weather and environmental protection. This includes air and water protection and thermal performance for energy conservation as required by the IECC. The IBC requirements cover each component of an exterior wall, such as the curtain or exterior wall itself and its covering and all openings such as windows, doors and vents. The IBC requires specific testing of building envelope components and full assemblies to reference standards such as those produced by AAMA and ASTM. This course provides participants the opportunity to understand the importance and function of the building envelope for occupant safety and comfort. Participants will also learn what role the IBC and applicable testing standards play in the design, construction and maintenance of building envelope components and systems, how the code is applied to installations and why there is a need to conduct both mock-up testing of designs and field testing of installations for code compliance and acceptable performance.
