Electrical Safety and Arc Flash Prevention


In this two day workshop, you will learn the general requirements of the 2018 edition of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace® to guide you in setting up, creating the appropriate documentation and procedures, and following an electrical safety program for compliance with OSHA 1910 Subpart S and OSHA 1926 Subpart K. You will also learn the general requirements of the 2018 edition of NFPA 70E and the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC)® related to arc flash hazards with a focus on high risk areas, necessary incident energy analysis and hazard risk categories to determine the personal protective equipment necessary for working with energized electrical equipment. The training will cover procedures for determining both the shock and the arc flash boundaries for 600 volt rated equipment, as well as specific training on methods of determining the amount of available inrush current, the current limiting capacity of overcurrent protective devices, and how to determine the let-thru current of current limiting circuit breakers and fuses. The workshop explains short-circuit ratings as applied within Article 240 of the NEC and as it relates to the fault current requirements for determining incident energy for personal protective equipment as specifically covered in Note 4 of Table 130.7(C)(15)(a) in the 2018 version of NFPA 70E. It also explains the theory of current limitation and how it affects the amount of time a circuit can be in an arcing fault. Course materials include individual copies of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace®, workshop presentation, and Certificate of Completion.

This workshop is delivered by UL’s Mark Ode, a nationally recognized expert on NFPA 70E® and the National Electrical Code®. Mr. Ode is a UL Lead Engineering Associate and Engineering Instructor. With nearly 48 years of experience as an electrician, electrical contractor, National Electrical Code (NEC) and electrical safety instructor, Mr. Ode has been actively involved in all aspects of the electrical industry. Mr. Ode was inducted into the NEC Quarter Century Club three years ago with 28 years experience as NEC Panel member and NFPA NEC Staff Liaison. Mr. Ode is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff of UL’s William Henry Merrill Society a member of IAEI’s Roadrunner Club, and recipient of IAEI’s Artie’s Apple Award.


Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
