Advanced Training on Metal Part Production


Offered at the Additive Manufacturing Competency Center (AMCC) in Louisville, Kentucky, students will learn and apply advanced additive manufacturing with metals during this 5-day hands-on course. Beginning with process and material fundamentals and progressing through design, build planning, process parameters, post-processing and quality evaluation, students will design and manufacture parts as part of project teams.

Below is the high-level overview of the curriculum:

Day 1: Introduction to Selective Laser Melting
Day 2: Design, process planning and set-up
Day 3: Process parameters and post-process heat treatments
Day 4: Finishing and evaluation
Day 5: Implementation



Advanced Training on Metal Part Production will be held at the Additive Manufacturing Competency Center (AMCC) in Louisville, KY. The AMCC is adjacent to the University of Louisville campus.


  • Perform the appropriate steps to fabricate parts, from AM machine set up to post processing and refinishing successfully
  • Determine the critical safety factors around AM metal part production including personal protection equipment (PPE), facility safety best practices, material handling and disposal, and mitigating exposure and explosion risks
  • Adapt process requirements from design preparation to support strategy and quality assurance

Target Audience

This course is intended for established additive manufacturing technical and business professionals.



Students must either complete the general prerequisites below OR meet the alternate prerequisites.

General Prerequisites

  • Completion of Foundations of 3D Printing Workshop (or equivalent)
  • Completion of core courses + one elective (or equivalents)

Alternate Prerequisites

  • At least 5 years of professional or production-level experience with additive and traditional manufacturing technology (or equivalent)
    • Design for Additive Manufacturing
      • Experience in engineering or industrial design, achieving working knowledge of the application of design for functionality, manufacturability, and conformity in additive manufacturing
      • Experience in concurrent engineering or in the developing design strategies (e.g., multi-disciplinary design optimization)
      • Experience in executing design strategies in multi-disciplinary teams or through simulations
    • Managing Quality & Safety in Additive Manufacturing
      • Experience in identifying and managing equipment and material hazards in a manufacturing environment (e.g., participation in process hazard analyses, understanding and implementing OSHA requirements)
      • Experience with design for six sigma or equivalent robust design process
      • Experience in quality management (i.e., testing, inspection, and certification) in manufacturing
        • Understanding of the application of laser scanning, coordinate measuring machines, x-ray/CT inspection in assuring geometric dimensions and tolerances
        • Understanding of the key quality control variables for AM materials and machines
        • Understanding of the non-destructive evaluation techniques for additive manufacturing
      • Experience in developing or managing a quality AND safety management system in a manufacturing environment


Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

Cancellation occurring one (1) month prior to the course date will be billed for twenty-five percent (25%) of the total registration amount. Rescheduling occurring one (1) month prior to the course date will be billed an additional ten percent (10%) of the total registration amount.
