Fire Equipment Safety (Module 3): Aerial Hydraulic Systems


The purpose of this program is to educate fire departments using aerial devices about the different aspects of aerial inspections and to build awareness of the Fire Equipment Safety (FES) services provided by UL. This module provides an overview of the inspection and testing requirements found in Chapter 22 of the NFPA 1911 Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles. Gain an understanding of the inspection requirements for hydraulic systems on aerial units such as where they are located, how they operate, inspection frequency and tools, and how to ensure that they are working properly.

Course content will remain available as a reference for 1 year from the date of purchase, and may be accessed at any time during those 12 months.


Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the inspection requirements for hydraulic systems on aerial units
  • List the tools required for inspecting hydraulic systems on aerial units
  • Explain the safety considerations when inspecting hydraulic systems on aerial units
  • Identify the location of hydraulic systems on aerial units
  • Inspect hydraulic systems on the aerial unit
