Designing for Intrinsic Safety


Learn the basic concepts for intrinsic safety and explore the requirements as outlined in IEC 60079-11.  This 60-minute course provides a description of faults applied to the circuits, components that may be used to limit the energy in the circuit and the limits of energy permitted in intrinsically safe circuits.


Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify standards that contain requirements for intrinsically safe equipment
  • Define intrinsic safety and intrinsically safe circuits
  • Provide examples of equipment that employ intrinsic safety
  • Describe IEC 60079-11 requirements for faults, levels of protection and separation distance
  • Identify components on which intrinsic safety depends
  • Identify infallible components and assemblies of components
  • Define spark ignition assessment and thermal assessment
