Designing for Compliance to IEC 62368-1 3rd Edition (all new!)

Safety standards for audio/video, information & communication technology (AV & ICT) equipment are shifting from legacy, prescriptive requirements to the latest hazard-based principles and requirements that emphasize safe design of these modern products from the earliest stages of product development. This interactive course helps AV & ICT equipment manufacturers -  whether currently familiar with IEC 60065 (AV) & IEC 60950-1 (ITE) or not -  to gain the expertise they need to design to and comply with the latest requirements associated with IEC 62368-1.

This recently refreshed course – now current with Edition No. 3 IEC 62368-1:2018 - is comprised of two separate training modules: an eLearning component and the instructor-led session. The eLearning component covers the basics of the standard and is completed in advance, enabling participants to maximize their in-class time with our UL expert. The instructor-led session digs deeper into the detailed technical content and features progressive knowledge checks and engaging interactions to help learners reinforce and apply the new concepts.

Each participant will be provided a copy of IEC 62368-1 3rd Ed. to utilize during the class. Once the training is over, the standards will be collected. When UL 62368-1 3rd Ed. is published, participants will be invited to download a digital copy at no additional cost ($600 value).

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the scope and purpose of the standard and how it is used.
  • Explain the basic hazard-based principles of the Standard (as covered in Clause 0 – Introduction to Principles of Safety)
  • Explain how to classify the various types of energy sources addressed by the standard (including electrical, fire, mechanical and others), design safeguards against these energy sources when hazardous, and verify the construction is in compliance with the applicable requirements
  • Identify the tests and compliance criteria contained in the standard that are necessary to verify compliance of safeguard designs
  • Explain the importance of Instructional Safeguards (markings & instructions) and why they are relevant to the safety of the equipment
  • Explain the importance of national differences driven by regulatory and similar sources
  • Describe the certification process in a global context

Learning objectives will be measured by knowledge checks and a final comprehensive assessment requiring participants to review requirements, complete a hazard analysis, and map out and define safeguards based on given energy sources.

Target Audience

  • Product Compliance Engineers, Product Design Engineers and their Management involved in the development and production of AV & ICT equipment and components, including consumer electronics, multi-media equipment, office appliances, power supplies and other forms of consumer and enterprise technology equipment and components.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

  • 1.3 CEUs for the workshop and 0.1 CEUs per eLearning module; contact your local jurisdiction for CEU recognition.
