Design for Additive Manufacturing Custom Training


Description

UL’s technical training curriculum was developed collaboratively with industry leading adopters and AM technical subject matter experts. The focus of UL’s technical design training is to impart a better understanding of how to fully capture the benefits of AM through effective design techniques. The training will cover the application of DFMA principles to AM, the development of robust DFX strategies, the execution of the strategies using simulations, and the readying of design files for additive manufacturing. Students will also gain hands-on experience editing STL files with Magics software and performing topology optimization with SIMULIA software.

Upon completion of each course students will receive a certificate of completion.

Prerequisites

Students registered for the course must have:

  • A general understanding of additive manufacturing technologies, processes, applications and terminologies
  • Familiarity with software design tools (e.g. CAD)
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA)

Registered students who do not meet the above prerequisites will be provided a link to UL’s online Foundations of 3D Printing. This training will be complimentary for registered participants.

Target Audience

This course is intended for professional designers, practicing engineers, and skilled technicians who want to understand how to design parts using AM.

 

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

Cancellation occurring fourteen (14) days prior to the course date will be billed for twenty-five percent (25%) of the total registration amount. Substitute participants are welcome. All cancellations must be submitted in writing (via e-mail).

Meet the Instructors

Dr. Michael Vasquez: Dr. Mike Vasquez is a 3D Printing expert specializing in pushing the boundaries of advanced 3D printing technology. He is the Founder of 3Degrees, a Chicago-based consulting company focused on helping organizations maximize their investment in the technology. He has worked side-by-side with some of the top machine manufacturers, material producers and end users in the industry, consulting with them to identify novel applications, test new materials, and develop frameworks to maximize R&D efficiency and boost ROI. He completed his PhD in Additive Manufacturing at Loughborough University and received both his bachelors and masters degrees from MIT in Materials Science and Engineering.

Dr. Khalid Rafi: Dr. Khalid Rafi has over 14 years of experience in teaching and research and is one of the few established metallurgist in additive manufacturing. His research has focused on process optimization, materials characterization and developing structure-property correlations for metallic parts produced using additive manufacturing techniques including selective laser melting (SLM), electron beam melting (EBM) and ultrasonic consolidation (UC). He has published 23 research papers and is acting as reviewer for various reputed international journals. He completed both his Masters and PhD in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and received his bachelors from Kerala University in Mechanical Engineering.

James Fort:James Fort is a Solution Architect with SIMULIA (the Dassault Systèmes brand for Realistic Simulation) focusing on solutions that help realize the potential of Additive Manufacturing technologies. These include design optimization solutions that unlock new possibilities for unconventional lightweight structures and predictive process simulation solutions that increase reliability and reduce costs associated with Additive Manufacturing. He started his career at SIMULIA in 2006 after receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and has held a variety of technical and strategy roles at SIMULIA in both the automotive and aerospace industries, including on-site work with key customers in industry. James is closely engaged with SIMULIA R&D and key industry partners to ensure that the SIMULIA solution for Additive Manufacturing provides transformative business value across a range of applications.
